Following topical international coverage of ‘sexual addiction’, a Massey University psychology student is conducting the first stage of a research project to investigate this phenomenon, more recently termed ‘out-of-control sexual behaviour’ (OOCSB). People with OOCSB may experience a constant compulsion for sexual activity which they pursue regardless of its consequences. They often do not find satisfaction in their sexual behaviour and its pursuit becomes destructive to themselves and/or others. This study aims to explore the types of personal and relationship patterns present in people with and without OOCSB, and is being run under the auspices of Sex Therapy New Zealand Ltd (STNZ).

From May until July 2010, New Zealand adults over the age of 18 with or without problematic sexual behaviour are invited to participate. The study involves completing an online questionnaire that takes up to 20 minutes, and the answers to all questions are received anonymously. The project's findings will guide further doctoral research looking into developing a treatment approach for people with OOCSB and will be available to the public on the STNZ and Massey University websites by the end of 2010.
